Ghost Pearls + Epiphenomena

Saturday, June 10, 2-6pm

RSVP for address

The event will feature a 9 x 8 foot architectural sculpture made from 1000 pieces of individually cut mirror woven into a form of lace, titled Ghost Pearls.

Ghost Pearls explores spaces of connection and mediation. The work is based on research into local and historical forms of lace-making, early digital art, and contemporary virtual space. It references lace in the collection of the Fairview Museum, UT; conversations with lace-makers; historical links between lace, value, and time; the 1964 digital artwork Ninety Parallel Sinusoids with Linearly Increasing Period by A. Michael Noll; and works of the Light and Space movement. The work was the subject of a recent solo exhibition at Granary Arts.

Also on view, a popup tabletop exhibition of works by Rita McBride, Alice Könitz, Scott Benzel, and Tanya Brodsky, titled Epiphenomena. Each of these small-scale sculptures gives rise to second-order phenomena, such as reflectivity, state changes, and other experiential properties. With materials that range from dry ice to electronics, their emergent phenomena hint at the mutable nature of perception and presence.

General updates: I’ve been making digital things, looks like I’ll begin releasing those in some format or another before the end of the year. To make a bit more space for such I’ll switch to an every-other-week schedule with The Pamplet, will take some trial and error to find a cadence as the things evolve. After finishing the last show and gradually getting a better grip on blender via small digital works, my next larger architectural digital work is simmering—the technical challenges still seem absurd, but that is typical. This all feels like an awkward in-between stage, probably a sign of growth.

It’s a feel when a pallet of raw material arrives with a plonk, and just sits there, awaiting transformation into… something.

Back in 2014 when I was spooling up for A house made of air, a flatbed truck arrived one afternoon and dumped 55 sheets of 4’x8’ plywood off the back end. It landed with a ka-bam.

Richard Swayze, the artist-craftsman advising on the feasibility of the sculpture I had in mind standing up properly, looked at me like I was nuts. He cocked an eyebrow that asked, pointedly, do you really intend to rip an absolutely mental amount of ply into this multi-hundred-piece jigsaw puzzle you’ve (somewhat vaguely) proposed? I did. He didn’t know me yet; there was an I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it-Kristin vibe. I looked at me like I was nuts too. So it begins.

Making of A house made of air and distance and echoes

Wish I had a pic from that day. By the time of the above work-in-progress shot, the stomach-churning pile of ply (at left) had dwindled.

This one shouldn’t be so difficult, are my famous last words every time. But really, this one should be much easier….

Pictured mid-coffee break. People wax on about the flavortudes of wine, which is a topic I should theoretically know something about, having been to idiosyncratic wineries on a majority of continents. It’s very nice, is my opinion. Coffee, on the other hand, is high-stakes and a matter of the utmost discernment. I get wistful thinking about 2013-era Kuma, in those days a did-it-when-he-felt-like-it roaster’s roaster (literally, that’s who my roaster friend fan-boyed for) in Seattle whose beans bloomed like liquid magic. We never know what the next cup might bring.

Which prompts a bit of musing for digital art, where 3D renderings are generated through the abstraction of a camera. There’s nothing else quite like these in the history of either sculpture or photography.
