Bookish moments and a dream team

Bindery and book notes

It’s been so fun to work on the experimental exhibition catalog for Inverted Dome, and what a dream team. With all sorts of confusion on how to approach the cover, one afternoon I called Charlene Matthews — also known as The Binderess, bookbinder for the greats and exceptional book artist in her own right — and she invited me by her studio, pictured above. It’s a cabinet of curiosities every bit as fascinating as she. I went over the ideas and problems, two minutes later she had the perfect solution and we were testing away.

That’s one moment of many (others involved me being very puzzled with a laminator). I’m grateful to Salome Schmuki for her impeccable design, Michael Ned Holte and Chris Fite-Wassilak for their insightful texts and reflections, the inimitable curator Aurora Tang for her guidance and vision, and to all you, in deep-calls-to-deep fashion, for supporting the way as you do. The Inverted Dome catalog is available for purchase here, and I’ll be sharing a bit more about it soon.

All are welcome to join for the launch of my new artist’s book Inverted Dome at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s Schindler House on Friday, April 22, from 6-8pm. The book was hand-produced and assembled in a limited edition in my studio, featuring full-color documentation of the installation alongside essays by writer and curator Michael Ned Holte and critic Chris Fite-Wassilak, and more.

Pasadena Art Alliance 2022 Art Auction

My painting Aimbot will be included in the upcoming Pasadena Art Alliance 21st Biennial Art Auction. The event will take place May 7, 2022, both online and in-person. I’m very grateful for the PAA’s work on behalf of artists across Los Angeles, and pleased to support it.

Manic Castle Hashes spotted in the wild

Back in 2020, I made a set of stickers using images from Manic Castle Hash, cut them from brushed-chrome vinyl on the same vinyl cutter I’d used to make the mural, and sent them out as a bit of art mail to some friends, colleagues, and awesome people. It’s been an unexpected joy to find out where they went, with the evidence still trickling in — only wish I had more of the rather ephemeral snapshots at hand.

Many of the stickers remained pristine on their original backing. But others seem to have been attracted to technological devices, doors and windows, David Bowie, and surfaces within arm’s reach of children. Could not be more delighted with these discoveries.
